im studying for my PMP exam.. as i was trying to find books.. i found 2 that i liked.. Rita Mulcahy`s PMP test prep and Andy Crowe`s PMP.How to pass on your first try..
now that i know which books i want.. i have been searching online and both books are wayy too expensive.. i found some used copies but they both are one edition old!! does it make any difference if i dont study from the newer edition.. i have the latest edition of the PMBOK.. so i am going to study that tooo.. please help!! thanks
Short answer: No, you need to use the latest editions of PMP study guides (ones that are specifically geared to the 4th edition of the PMBOK guide).
Explanation: The previous editions of Mulcahy’s and Crowe’s books are geared to the PMP exam based on the 3rd edition of PMBOK. If you memorize out of date editions, you run the risk of thinking you’re answering questions correctly, but get them wrong because of the changes to the exam.
Suggestion: The PMP exam is a rigorous exam. You’ll find that the cost of the new books is small compared to the cost of the PMP exam, let alone retaking it if you don’t pass the first time. And the PMBOK guide only supplies about 60-70% of what you need to pass the exam. So you really need an up to date study guide to work with. If you want to study on your own, I’d recommend getting either Mulcahy’s book or Crowe’s and study that with PMBOK. If that’s not do-able now, maybe look around on ebay or craigslist for the latest editions of either one.
If you’re looking for study groups or low-cost classes, you might want to check out your local PMI chapter. Joining PMI and your local chapter for a year BEFORE you take the exam gets you a BIG discount on the PMP exam–so its like getting a 1 year of PMI membership for free. Most PMI chapters offer free or low-cost study groups or classes that include study materials.
Good luck!
